Codeine (USA) with special guests A Broken Sail
8:00pm, Fri 12 April, 2024
The Underground Sydney, NSW
CODEINE
Codeine from New York City make their maiden voyage to Australia! Playing 4 strictly limited shows in support of their lost album Dessau, recorded in 1992 but only released last year, along with new, colored vinyl reissues of their three original Sub Pop records: Frigid Stars LP, Barely Real (EP), and The White Birch, all via the archival label Numero Group.
With the release of Frigid Stars LP (1990), Codeine almost single-handedly invented what would later become known as "slowcore." Predating influential albums by kindred spirits Low and Duster by almost half a decade, Codeine's slow, graceful songs support lyrics that are a disturbingly pure embodiment of depression. These will be Codeine’s first ever Australia shows, and follow sold-out shows in New York, LA, London, and Paris.
A BROKEN SAIL
The Cinematic Avant-garde collective.
Taking influence from the Louisville sound of the 90’s; ‘A Broken Sail’ has been making waves domestically and internationally since 2017.
Band leader and sole songwriter of the group ‘Zal Dastur’ made his way on the international scene with Papa M in 2018.
This propelled the bands profile and saw their release 1906 sell out of 500 copies pressed overnight.
The band who is well know for their searing volume assaults and quiet sharp moments, is fresh from ANZ tours with PAPA M and June Of 44 and ready to serve up the mood!
We acknowledge that this event will be held on the land of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation and recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
