Off the back of their new release 'Lover', Little May are heading out on their East Coast Tour this February. The new single marks a whole new chapter for band members, Hannah Field and Liz Drummond, wooing fans with their signature sound of intricate harmonies and well-crafted, emotionally-charged indie rock.

Little May started as high school friends who shared a passion for music which resulted in a multitude of accolades including a triple j Album of the Week, features on BBC Radio and performances on some of the world's biggest stages, including festivals like Splendour In The Grass, Falls and Laneway, through to supporting the likes of Mumford & Sons, The National and City & Colour.

A month out from their 'Lover' Tour we had the chance to chat with Liz about the new release, forthcoming album and New Year's Resolutions.

1. I'm crazy about your new single 'Lover', such a funky song to get my groove on to. What was your main inspiration for the song?

Glad you like it! It was a while back now but I wanted to write us a solid piano-driven song that was simple but punchy. I started with the keys and put down a demo with some midi drums, added some guitars and wrote the chorus. Then Han came in and wrote the verses. It's kind of your classic slightly angry, but upbeat break up song. To me, it feels like almost coming out the other end of a relationship that doesn't serve you anymore. Like you're not quite there, but you're almost there.

2. Can we expect a similar vibe for your upcoming album?

The album is a bit of a mixed bag. There are some songs that have very little going on, others that smack a bit harder, some that are somewhere in the middle. I'm proud of it, hopefully, you might like it :)

3. Can you talk us through your songwriting process for the album? Did you sit down together to write the songs or did you both have separate ideas that you later joined?

Again, it was a bit of a mixed bag. Most of the songs we wrote together, but there's a few I wrote by myself, and a song called Blue Highway that Han wrote with a co-writing hand from our delightful band member, Mark Harding.

4. Do you have anything else in the pipeline for this year you can share with us? Perhaps a sneaky collab in the works?

No collabs in the works but if anyone's keen send us a message, haha. We're playing these shows in Feb which will be fun. We will be putting out a new song really soon, and the video for that is being edited as we speak. After that, we will put out another song, and then we will release the record :)

5. Speaking of collabs...If you could pick one artist or band to join forces with in the future who would it be?

Look, it's a stretch. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't dreamt about working with PJ Harvey, John Parish or Gareth Liddiard. Not all together. Although I've thought about working with PJ Harvey and John Parish together. I feel stupid writing them out, but yeah, I've thought about it.

6. I'm usually not one for making New Year's resolutions but this year I decided to change things up and ended up with a rather long list. Do you have any resolutions for the year?

I don't usually either, but this year's one where I'm dedicated to getting creative in ways that are new & deeply interesting for me. I want to make music that challenges me as a human & a writer. I also want to add to our veggie garden and keep it alive. I want to start a podcast with a friend of mine. And I want to pat the dog next door that won't let me near it.

Little May performs at Oxford Art Factory on Friday 15 February. Limited tickets remain.
